If you live in an apartment and you're searching for an "indoor generator," the honest answer starts with a safety fact, not a product: there is no such thing as a safe fuel-burning generator indoors. Not in a kitchen, not on a balcony, not in a garage with the door open.

Marketing pages love "runs your fridge for 30 hours!" Here's the arithmetic that produces a number you can trust, using the 1,024 Wh class as the example:
- Usable energy: 1,024 Wh × ~0.85 inverter efficiency ≈ 870 Wh actually delivered.
- Fridge consumption: a modern mid-size fridge averages 100–200 W while the compressor runs — but the compressor only runs 30–40% of the time if you keep the door shut.
- Effective draw: 150 W × 35% duty cycle ≈ ~50–60 Wh per hour.
- Runtime: 870 Wh ÷ 55 Wh/h ≈ 15 hours. Call it 12–18 depending on your fridge's age, size, and how often the door opens.
Every number above is either on a spec sheet or on your fridge's nameplate. If a review gives you a runtime without showing this chain, it's a guess.
Apartment-specific buying notes
- Recharging without a backyard: you can't stake out solar panels on a lawn, but a 100–200 W portable panel on a south-facing balcony genuinely works — expect roughly 300–800 Wh on a decent day depending on sun hours and panel angle. All five units above take solar input.
- Noise: battery stations are near-silent (a cooling fan under load). Your neighbors will never know, which is not something anyone has ever said about a gas generator.
- Storage: LiFePO4 holds charge well. Store at 50–80%, top it up every few months, and it's ready. Don't store any power station at 0%.
